Daniel pleads for God to take things into His own hands and remedy the situation. Upon close examination of Daniel's prayer we see that it is an intercessory prayer.Daniel probably interpreted the 70 weeks prophecy to be directly related to his prayer and his people. It does. There are obvious historical but there are more literal last day interpretations a well. Look in the time chart region of this harmony for a more complete discussion of the 70 Weeks.
Point 1We see four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth. Then another angel comes with a loud voice, saying hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. Could the four angels holding the four winds of the earth be the four horsemen of the first four seals in chapter 6? In the Book of Zechariah we get a possible connection: Zec 6:1 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses. Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth. Zechariah 6:1-5 The similarities are striking, also the angel has named the four horsemen, the four spirits that which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth. It's quite possible that the four angels of chapter 7 are also the four horsemen. If so then it only stands to reason that chapter 7 describes the conditions when the four horsemen start their actions. The four angels must hold back the winds of strife until God's people are sealed on their foreheads. Another possibility is that the four angels are released when 7 trumpets are sounded. Point 2Since the four horsemen are to spread war and bloodshed, famine and unrest; it would seem that they would actively cause the misery. However, in Revelation 7:1 we see that the four angels are holding back the four winds of strife. When the death and destruction begin it is because these four spirits stop their work. Its not the time they start their dirty work. God has all along helped to control this world's peace. It is only because of God's protective hands that we have received the blessings of peace, law, and order. Once God's people are sealed that complete anarchy will prevail.
We see that the 144,000 come from the 12 tribes of Israel. Right away this scenario does not seem right. Where are these tribes today? They don't exist. Only a few tribes exist today. Most disappeared when the northern kingdom of Israel was taken away to Assyria. Those tribes today don't exist. What are the possible meanings? Some ignore this list of tribes and the numbers. Others declare that Christians have been drafted in to the various tribes, according to the character of each person drafted in. Still others suggest that the 144,000 were selected long ago when the tribes actually existed, possible from the time of Christ. Could they possibly arise from the special resurrection? The major problem for having the tribes sealed from the past is found in verse 3. Don't harm the servants of our God until they are sealed on their foreheads. The 144,000 must be living on earth in the last days when the time of trouble comes on the world. |
